Old Testament Prophecy: 15 I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel. (Genesis 3:15)
New Testament Fulfillment: 4 But when the completion of time came, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law. (Galatians 4:4)
In the Garden of Eden, when God was relating the punishment that would come because of Satan’s deception and treachery, He made the statement found in Genesis 3:15. This is known as the Proto-Evangelium: the first gospel. It is the first time in Scripture that the Good News of a Savior to destroy Satan and his work is announced. For all of church history this announcement has been considered messianic – that it refers to the Messiah who would one day come.
God makes it clear that this Messiah would be (amazing to think of, but nonetheless true) born by a woman! This is what is meant by “her seed.” The Messiah would have flesh and walk among us. But this phrase tells us something else unique about the Messiah.
Among humans the male carries the seed, the female provides the egg. Yet, God clearly says the Messiah will come from her seed. Women do not have seed. This statement is not possible…humanly.
Thus, we have our first clue that the Messiah would be God in the flesh – from God, not from mortal man, though carried and born by a woman. And this is exactly what the New Testament bears out happened in the birth of Jesus.
At just the right time, “God sent His Son, born of a woman.”
Near the very beginning this announcement was made. In the birth of Jesus it was fulfilled!
