Witness 3: John the Baptist

John included seven witnesses to prove Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God; so that readers of his gospel would believe in Jesus and believing, would have eternal life!

As Jesus continued His discussion with the Jewish leaders, He mentioned another witness who bore testimony to who He was.  “You have sent [messengers] to John, and he has testified to the truth.” (John 5:33).  This John who Jesus mentions was John the Baptist.

Was John the Baptist a witness for the veracity of Jesus as Messiah?  Absolutely; it was his purpose, to prepare the way and announce the arrival of the Messiah – which he did.

There was a man named John who was sent from God.  He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.  He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.  The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.  (John 1:6-9)

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!  This is the One I told you about…”  (John 1:29-30a)

“I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!”  Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.  When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”  (John 1:34-36)

Clearly, John the Baptist bore witness that Jesus was the Son of God, the Lamb of God, come to take away the sin of the world.  He is the third witness Jesus listed.

I wonder, how many witnesses will it take for you to believe?
